Axel Hotel Barcelona
Hotel · Eixample (Gaixample)The flagship of the Axel chain (since 2003, 101 rooms, adults only), 'created by and for gays' (official website); the chain calls itself 'LGBT and hetero-friendly', about 75% LGBTQ+ guests (Wikipedia/Axel). Two bars: (1) the SkyBar on the 7th floor with pool, hot tub, loungers, city views and the famous bar counter made of lit-up colourful condoms; according to Time Out (07/2025) open to the public, with DJ sets, drag shows and theme parties. Official current hours: pool 10–20, bar service 13–20; Time Out 07/2025 listed Mon–Fri 20–24, Sat/Sun 12–18 & 20–24. The SkyBar is very seasonal (several sources: season from June/summer, ask reception for winter hours), so rooftop hours for November 2026 are unclear. The summer pool parties are considered legendary (The Gay Passport). (2) The Groundbar on the ground floor: daily 19:30–02:30 according to the official website, live DJ sets and drag shows at weekends – the year-round evening option. The Nikkei 103 restaurant still exists (official website: breakfast 7:30–11, lunch 13–16, dinner 20–23) – not listed separately here.
Assessment: queer-friendly 3 – a gay hotel with history in the Gaixample, drag shows, mostly LGBTQ+ guests. Crowd mainly international/tourists according to Time Out, mostly men according to The Gay Passport; 'straight-friendly mix' because of its declared hetero-friendliness. 'Upscale' because of leather armchairs/velvet sofas and higher prices ('slightly higher drink prices', Gay Passport) → price level 3. Solo 2: a hotel bar with a tourist crowd, sociable on party/drag nights, otherwise more couples/groups. Group 3. The evenings below are the Groundbar's (year-round, official); SkyBar winter hours are not confirmed.
